Rhinoplasty FAQs

There are advantages to having a rhinoplasty, including:

  • Correct breathing problems caused by injury, trauma or birth defect
  • Lessen the size of a bulbous nasal tip
  • Diminish the size of a large nose
  • Slim down a wide nose
  • Rectify a crooked nose
  • Flatten and smooth a noticeable bump, especially on the bridge of the nose
  • Decrease the length of an over-protruding nasal tip
  • Bring back symmetry to the nose

What are the Benefits of a Rhinoplasty?

    What are the Risks?

Some of the risks involved with a rhinoplasty can include bad reaction to anesthesia, bruising, difficulty breathing, infection, numbness, scarring and swelling. Although rare, there is a very slim chance of a nasal septal perforation that could require an additional surgery.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for an open rhinoplasty in San Diego include men and women of any age beginning in the teenage years who are in good physical health. Based on heritage and lifestyle experiences, many people want to make changes to the shape of their nose, an individualized component of our face and appearance. Dr. Malone will listen to your particular needs to provide information about the options for treatments that may be best suited to you. Patients should have realistic expectations for their results. During a consultation with Dr. Malone, she will determine if this procedure is the right choice to address your needs.

    What is the Recovery Like?

You may experience some discomfort after your procedure. You will likely have some bruising and swelling, especially around the eyes, that will be worse for a couple of days and may take up to two weeks to heal. Your nose will have minor swelling that will not be noticeable to other people and eventually go away over the next six months. You will probably have to wear a nasal splint for the first week. Within two to three weeks, it should be fine to return to your normal social activities with no recognizable signs that you had a nose job. You should avoid strenuous activity for three to six weeks after your procedure.

Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most commonly requested plastic surgery procedures every year.

Rhinoplasty also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that improves the shape, size and symmetry of a nose and reshapes it to fit more proportional to the rest of the face. A rhinoplasty can correct breathing problems caused by injury, trauma or birth defect. The procedure can also be done for cosmetic reasons to alter the shape and appearance of the nose.

The nose is the central point of the face making the shape of the nose the most noticeable facial feature in most patients. Additionally, the shape of our nose is the primary facial feature that defines our facial image and profile and also refines the appearance of our other facial features. It is very distressing to patients whose nose draws unwanted attention as the focal point of their face and distracts from their beautiful facial features.

Types of Rhinoplasty

    Open vs Closed Rhinoplasty

    Non-Surgical or "Liquid" Rhinoplasty

There are other treatment choices to change the shape of your nose without undergoing any surgery. Dr. Malone’s practice has different treatments for non-surgical rhinoplasty.

Dr. Malone has a deep understanding of minimally invasive rhinoplasty techniques, including open rhinoplasty in which a small external incision is made on the underside of the nose. This incision heals very well and is less visible over time. For certain types of noses and nasal shaping techniques, this is the preferred approach.

Dr. Malone also utilizes the scarless or “closed” endonasal rhinoplasty technique, which leaves no scars and reduces healing time. The incisions for a closed rhinoplasty are minimally invasive and are done on the inside of the nose where the nasal bones and cartilage are sculpted to leave the desired shape. The procedure uses specialized minimally invasive telescopes to allow nasal shaping with minimal disruption. People typically heal faster with closed rhinoplasty because there is no incision on the skin.
